Victoria Morgan Course: Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health |
I had recently changed roles in my workplace where I work with young offenders, and we have started to see more young people coming through the door with various mental health problems.
All the young people have different mental health needs, and some have had abusive issues. I wanted to improve my knowledge around mental health to have a better understanding of what the young people are going through and what support they may need. The layout of the online platform and the learning materials is second to none and I found it a much easier way of learning than other courses I’ve done of a similar nature. This really helped me get through my learning journey. One of the main skills I’ve learned from the course was to have more empathy with the young people and that each of their needs are different and they are the most important thing to them, and each person needs to be catered for in their own way. In addition to my improved skills in the workplace, I have also benefited on a personal level to utilise these skills in my home life. BACK TO MENU ➥ |
Courtney Gibb Course: Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health |
I manage a children’s day nursery and Heyllo! Limited contacted me about funding for training courses in improving knowledge in children’s mental health.
When completing the course, I really enjoyed it and found the materials very useful. My aim for undertaking the course was to improve knowledge to better support the children in my care especially due to the impact the pandemic has had. This aim was achieved, and it also highlighted that staff mental health is important too. Through the knowledge that I’ve gained from the course I will be implementing new aspects to the care strategies as well as embedding them into our policies. The learning has not only helped me but will have an impact on my colleagues and the children we work with. BACK TO MENU ➥ |
Natasha Handy Course: Understanding Autism |
I wanted to do the course on Autism to improve my understanding around the topic as I have a daughter with ASD, and I also have volunteers who work for me with Autism.
I already had some knowledge but after doing the course realised that there was still more to learn, and I’ve found everything really useful. I do now have a better understanding of Autism and found that you can’t expect people with ASD to change their behaviour to suit you and that it’s others that may need to adjust their behaviour or be more accepting. A lot of the outlook from some people with ASD is black and white and there is little to no room for grey areas in their thought process. The one-to-one support I received from my tutor was fantastic and I’m thankful for all the help she gave me. I feel that more people should to this course to get a better understanding and I would recommend this course to anyone. BACK TO MENU ➥ |
Jennifer Storey Course: Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health |
I volunteer as an independent visitor for children in local authority care and the organisation advertised the courses to better understanding children and young people’s mental health.
My role is to be there for children of different ages and be someone for them to speak openly too and build a relationship with, without it being too formal for them. The way the learning materials were set out helped with my learning and were informative. The course has given me an in depth understanding of mental health concerns in children and has been of benefit to my role as well as having an impact on my personal life with my own children. I enjoyed finding out how to identify mental health concerns and the support to put in place which can at time almost counteract the concern from worsening. I would like to continue my learning in the future around children’s behaviour. BACK TO MENU ➥ |
Megan Dunn Course: Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health |
I already had some good experience working with adults and children around mental health and I was due to start a new position as a TA at a SEN school so wanted to reaffirm my existing knowledge as well as gaining any new knowledge in mental health topics that could help me in the role.
The platform was easy to navigate and the way some of the questions were written made me think about things in a different way than I would have before. Through the research I did for the course, I discovered how many charitable organisations there are out there and the different ways they can support. I now have a good understanding of the course contents for understanding children and young people’s mental health and I felt a great sense of achievement when I completed the course and it was confirmed that I’d passed. Banana Moon Nursery Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health |
We are a Child care and Day Nursery with 24 employees based in Durham. Mental Health in children and staff are challenges that are unique to our business and sector.
We needed support and training in Mental Health and strategies to better support children better. There was a also a need for improving mental health understanding especially due to the impact that the pandemic has had on children over the past 18 months. Three of our staff have benefitted from completing the course which will help them in their roles, however, the nursery as a whole will benefit from improvements we will make due to our newly gained knowledge from the course which will better support all of the children in our care. The course has helped us improve knowledge around understanding mental health in children and young people. We are now considering further staff development as a result of undertaking ESF training such as Leadership skills. BACK TO MENU ➥ |
